Volunteer Stories

Emma Arnhols and Expanding Horizons

Emma Arnhols is a dedicated volunteer at Whispering Manes and an accomplished equestrian in the hunter world. Emma also founded a non-profit organization called Expanding Horizons. Using money she won in show ring, Emma donated funds to Expanding Horizons and scheduled a day at the barn for the youth of Macedonia Baptist Church in Coconut Grove. During the field trip the participants had a chance to interact with Whispering Manes’ horses. They learned all about horse care and more. We are grateful that Emma chose Whispering Manes for this wonderful field trip!

Florida Blue and Best Buy

Corporate Responsibility, Give Back Days, Days of Service, whatever the name, Whispering Manes has been the beneficiary of incredible volunteers from Florida Blue and Best Buy. People from both corporations have come and participated in large projects to help maintain the property including painting offices, pruning trees and hedges, and replacing fence posts. We welcome groups who want to do a Day of Service. Let us know through the Contact Us page if you have a group that is interested in volunteering at Whispering Manes.

Gianni’s Eagle Scout Project

Eagle Scout is the highest rank attainable by a Boy Scout. On June 14th, 2014, Gianni LaVecchia of Troop 599 in the Hurricane District took the last step in attaining Eagle Scout rank when the troop delivered two mounting steps, four benches and a tic, tac, toe, sensory board to Whispering Manes. All the items were planned, built and constructed under Gianni’s leadership.

With the support of Scout Master, Phil Engelmann and the 22 scouts in Troop 599, Gianni hosted a car wash to raise the funds to purchase the materials necessary to construct the items. He also solicited the donation of an outdoor tic, tac, toe board from Nuovo Biologics. Gianni also organized the two days of construction to needed complete the items.

The items that Gianni and Troop 599 constructed greatly enhance the program at Whispering Manes. They will be useful to the program for many years to come and the tic, tac, toe board is the first outdoor sensory object that will installed in Whispering Manes’ newly planned sensory trail.

FIU Project Panther Life Days of Service

For several days in May and June 2013, students enrolled in FIU’s Project Panther Life program came out to the barn to do community service. They helped with all the morning chores, cleaning water and feed buckets and mucking out the paddocks. For many of them this was their first time working around and with horses. Everyone worked hard and had a truly one of a kind experience. After completing the chores they enjoyed a healthy lunch under our banyan trees.

Thanks to all the volunteers from FIU Project Panther Life!
